Manchester Metropolitan University - Birley Fields Campus

SCS Contract Scope:

SCS are working alongside Sir Robert McAlpine at Manchester Metropolitan University’s (MMU) new £60m Birley Fields academic building in Hulme.

The project comprises the construction of a new landmark five-storey academic building, energy centre and extensive public realm works for the Faculties of Education and Health, Psychology & Social Care.

The academic building, which has aspirations to be one of the most sustainable buildings in the UK higher education sector, is targeting a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating and is being designed towards a zero carbon, waste and water strategy while providing improved biodiversity for the site. When complete the building will provide a superb learning and teaching environment for more than 6,000 students, including lecture theatres, specialist teaching accommodation and social learning areas. It will also be the location for around 500 academics, researchers, technical and support staff. The ground floor will be open to the public and facilities including a sports hall, performance spaces, treatment centres, cafes and informal meeting areas will be available for community bookings.

SCS’s highly skilled management and operative team will complete drylining partitions, metal framed plasterboard ceilings, metal and mineral fibre suspended ceilings in communal areas. In addition, due to the exposed concrete ceilings being utilised on the scheme, there is a requirement for over 7,000 linear metres of bespoke acoustic baffles, and wall panels to meet the acoustic requirement of the teaching spaces.

Main Contractor: Sir Robert McAlpine
Architect: Capita Symonds
Client: Manchester Metropolitan University
Contract Date: 2014
SCS Contract Value: £1.5 million
SCS Project Leader: Trevor Watson - Project Director / Nick McDowell - Project Manager

As you are no doubt aware, the main building at Birley Fields (Section 6 of the main contract) achieved Sectional Completion on 18'' July 2014, along with Partial Possession of a good proportion of the public realm works (Section 5). This in effect was 3 weeks early, & has allowed the University to commence moving staff into the building & preparing for the new academic year in a structured fashion.

The building has been well received by those looking on from the outside, but more importantly, by an exceptionally delighted Client & the users of the building who have been full of praise for the quality of the finished building & the way in which it has been delivered.

This doesn't happen by accident, & is testament to the effort placed into the project by all who worked on it.

A little belatedly perhaps, I am writing to you to congratulate your company on the efforts over the past 12 months in helping us to achieve a successful conclusion to this landmark project.

It is perhaps unfair to single out individuals, but I would particularly like to thank your site managers Nick McDowell & Kevin Carthy for the professional manner in which they led the construction team, their approach to our collaborative planning initiative, and the manner in which they were willing to solve the numerous challenges of this project. They were ably supported by your Contracts Manager Trevor Watson.

The finished product is of an excellent quality and the whole building is one that we should all be proud of.

It simply remains for you to ensure that any outstanding completion works are dealt with as promptly as possible so that there is no lingering defects work.

I look forward to working with you again on any future projects. Please pass on my thanks to the whole of your team involved.
